Who is who on the rehabilitation team

The rehabilitation team are a group of professionals who know all about helping you to recover from you ABI. You will probably have already met a few occupational therapists in hospital but you will find you will meet lots more people who are all there to help you when you get to the rehabilitation centre.

The rehabilitation team will have the following people in it, although there maybe other people that will help you too:

Clinical Specialist Team Leader

This is a doctor who is interested in helping people in rehabilitation. It is their job to make sure that everyone in the team is helping you as much as possible and are to make sure that your needs are being met.

Consultant Physician

Sometimes after having an ABI you can have lots of different problems that are very complicated and require a doctor who knows all about the problems you may face. A consultant physician will make sure that all of your medical needs are met and will meet you every so often to see how you are doing. They might send you for more tests and see if there is something else the hospital might be able to help you with.

Clinical Psychologist

Psychologists are trained to know all about how our personality develops and how our brain works. An ABI may cause changes in your personality and behaviour and a clinical psychologist might be able to help you come to terms with this.

Educational Psychologist

An educational psychologist is someone who knows all about how the brain learns new things. This isn’t the same as a teacher so an educational psychologist won’t teach you maths or english. They will help you to find new ways to help your brain learn.

Occupational Therapist

You will find there will be more occupational therapists in rehabilitation. They are there to make sure that you are re-leaning those skills you lost and make sure that you are doing all the things you can do.

Physiotherapists

You will still be seen by physiotherapists too. As you start to improve you may find you can start to do more things and the physiotherapists will be there to make sure all of your movements are OK. They can help you with muscle stiffness too and can ensure that you get enough gentle exercise to keep healthy.

Rehabilitation Assistant

A rehabilitation assistant will help you with all sorts of things. They are your first point of contact and spend considerable time with you so that they can help advocate (help you to put your point of view across) for you when you are finding things difficult. Some people have a support worker which is similar.

Rehabilitation Teachers

Some rehabilitation centres have teachers there too. They can help you with some school work although the emphasis is more on helping you get better than it is on GCSE’s, tests and exams!

Speech and Language Therapist

A speech and language therapist will continue the progress made with your speech and language therapist in hospital. As you start to adjust you might find your speech improves. A therapist can help you to make the most of your speaking and can really help you a lot.

Nurses

Some rehabilitation centres have nurses there to help you too. They are there to help you with lots of things and do similar things to the ward nurses that looked later you in hospital.
