There are so many different people in hospital! You may remember some of them but not all. This section will tell you about the different people who helped you get better in hospital.
Doctors
Doctors have trained for many years and know all about how the body works. You would have been seen by many doctors in hospital and they all would have helped decided how to treat you to help you get better. There are lots of different types of doctors who are all experts at different things. In every speciality there is a consultant who is in charge of lots of doctors working in his team.
Surgeons
Surgeons do operations. They have trained especially to do this. They are the ones who walk around wearing outfits that look like pyjamas (called theatre scrubs) and have funny hats on!
Staff Nurses - Registered Nurses
Nurses work very closely with doctors and do all of the things that help you get better like look after you, watch to see how you are and give you all the you need. They also look after your friends and family when they are distressed.
Theatre Nurses
A theatre nurse is a specialist nurse who helps the surgeon do the . They also wear scrubs and the funny hats.
Clinical Nurse Specialist
Clinical nurse specialists are nurses who know a lot about one particular area of nursing. You may be seeing an Epilepsy Nurse Specialist, for example.
Student Nurses
Student nurses are from a University and are learning how to be a Staff Nurse (Registered Nurse). It can take 3-4 years to train to be a nurse and there are lots of exams to do.
Physiotherapist
A physiotherapist knows all about how the body moves and knows about how the muscles work. Physiotherapists do many things to help your body get better - they help you with chest problems when you are in intensive care and help you learn to walk again when you are better.
Radiographers
Radiographers take pictures and images of the inside of your body. They work the MRI and CT scanners. Radiographers know how to interpret the pictures which can help the doctors and nurses decide what to do.
Speech and Language Therapists
Speech therapists know all about how we talk. Talking can be quite complicated and after hurting your , you might find it hard to talk and need to learn how to talk again. Speech and language therapists can help you with this.
Occupational Therapists
An occupational therapist will help you find things to do that enable you to make the most of what you can do. Sometimes everyday tasks can be difficult to do and this can become frustrating. An occupational therapist will help you get your confidence and skills back.
Play Specialists
Play specialists come and see you when you are sitting up and in bed and feeling bored! They can help you find things to do that will keep your mind busy. Being in hospital can be very boring at times.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists know all about how medicines work on the body and make sure that all the medicines you are getting are helping you to get better as quickly as possible.
Scientists
There are lots of different scientists in hospital. They look at the blood samples that the doctors and nurses take and can help the doctors to diagnose what the problem is.
Hospital School Teacher
You may be seen by the hospital school teacher when you are on the ward. They can help you with some of the school work you have missed while you have been away.
Porters
The porters keep the hospital running smoothly by taking the patients around the hospital to places they need to go.
Security Staff
Security staff keep everyone safe in hospital and help the nurses out when people start giving them too much grief!
Dietician
A dietician will come and see you in hospital and will make sure you getting enough calories and the right food to keep healthy and help your body repair itself.
Kitchen Staff
The kitchen staff keep the hospital well fed and ensure that all the patients get the food that the dieticians suggest to make sure you stay healthy!
