Having an operation

Not everyone who has an ABI will need to have an operation. It all depends on what happened to you, how poorly you are and what the scan pictures showed.

If you needed an operation, the doctors would have thought long and hard about what sort of operation you needed.

When it was time for the operation, you would have been kept unconscious by having some medicine called a general anaesthetic. All it means is that the doctors make sure that you won’t wake up or remember anything about the operation and that you won’t feel a thing!

The surgeons will then do the operation. Some operations can take a long time, other operations can be quick. You won’t remember anything about it though.

After the operation you will be taken either back to intensive care or taken straight to the ward. It all depends on what operation you have had and how poorly you are after having it.

“Lots of people worry about going for an operation . I can tell you more about it so you don’t have to worry.”

“I don’t remember having my operation! I was asleep the whole time! Let me tell you all about it!”
